May 4, 2026 Jessica Bentley  Dr. Sowers  Changing Perspectives on Disabled Sports At the start of the class, I had a limited understanding of disabled sports. Mostly, I thought that they are mostly a smaller version of traditional sports, and I didn’t fully recognize the level of skill, dedication, and competition involved. I also wasn't aware of all the different types of organized events or how many opportunities actually exist for athletes with disabilities. The reason I didn't know about this was due to a lack of exposure; I realize that I underestimated both the athletes and the importance of these sports. Throughout the course, I have learned a lot about h ow disability supports are highly competitive, structured, and empowering. Athletes train just as hard, if not harder than athletes in traditional sports, adapting to challenges in ways that require incredible strength and creativity.
